Careers

To gain an advantage in today’s competitive work environment the earlier you start planning your career, the better. If you are studying business and management, then chances are that you’ve already given some thought to your future. That’s because the subject combines an academic approach with very practical tools and knowledge.

What kinds of jobs do Business and Management graduates do?

The short answer is – a real mix. Business studies graduates are found in almost every employment sector: commercial roles exist in all types of industry, including: retail distribution, hospitality and leisure, financial institutions, sales, marketing, production management.

Around 20 per cent of business studies graduates enter employment in business and finance professional roles. Relevant opportunities include those in: professional services (chartered accountancy, business consultancy, law and tax), finance (banking, city markets, insurance).  Significant numbers of business graduates also head for the media sector and take up administrative positions. Working while you study

Gaining work experience while you study is the main way you can boost your employability. SBM has an Internship Co-ordinator who sources part-time projects in local charities and three month internships in local businesses and start-ups for SBM students of any year: search QRecruit for opportunities all year round.



Volunteering is also valued by employers. Queen Mary’s Students’ Union runs an excellent volunteering service: www.qmsu.org/volunteering/

The Careers and Enterprise Centre

This service is available from the start of your studies to help you find part time work and work experience, as well as supporting you with finding work after graduation.  The Careers and Enterprise Centre offer an enterprise programme for aspiring entrepreneurs, over 90 networking events, fairs and workshops with employers and alumni per year, one-to-one appointments to check your applications and discuss any query from career choice to finding work experience and a tailored programme of events just for SBM students run by Abi Sharma, the SBM Careers Consultant.  Follow Careers on Twitter and Facebook, and visit us in WG3, Queens Building, 020 7882 8533.
