Project title:

"What makes open innovation closed? - Focusing on the difference between R&D and supply networks"

Project description:

The innovation process encompasses the whole process from generating knowledge to realizing a profitable result using such knowledge. However, there is a lack of research examining the whole process of open innovation. The innovation field is more likely to focus on obtaining knowledge, rather than following the integration and commercialization of the knowledge. In contrast, in the field of operations management, there has been much research on integration and commercialization of knowledge. Consequently, despite the need to analyse both the process by which a R&D network generates an idea for innovation and that by which a supply network develops and diffuses an idea from an integrated approach, there is few related research.

Therefore, the aim of this study is to consider these two perspectives together by understanding the difference and relation between the stage of innovation sourcing and the stage of integrating and commercializing, and thus provide broad perspectives of innovation process.

Through analysing innovation process, this study is expected to provide following implications. First, by analysing R&D network and supply network together, this study can propose a new perspective that sheds light on open innovation by reducing the gap between these research areas. Second, this study can provide practical and useful suggestions regarding a firm's implementation of open innovation via managing the networks in each stage of the innovation process.
