A strategic analysis of the use of business practices for the purpose of developing sustainability in the nonprofit sector.

Project Description: As demand for public service grows, it is foreseeable that society will need to depend more on the services of nonprofit organizations (Cunningham, 2010). Literature on productive organizational strategies tends to be based on studies of for-profit, commercial businesses which may be imitated by not-for-profit organizations. However, NFPs’ lack of exposure to the specialized languages and practices of for-profit businesses can be a stumbling block for such processes of imitation, leading to misinterpretation and an inability to apply the lessons drawn from the for-profit sector successfully (Miljkovic, 2006). This in turn, makes it problematic for NFPs to gain the improvements in competitive edge that they seek.

It is the intention of this research to analyze sustainable business practice strategies accommodating a format and language suitable for the unique culture of nonprofit organizations. This research aims to develop a framework to building literature around the process of transitioning for-profit ideals into the nonprofit sector in order to increase sustainability.
