SBM Hosts UK Social Marketing Conference

On the 14th of September 2017, the School of Business and Management (SBM) at Queen Mary University of London hosted the first UK Social Marketing conference in six years (http://wsmconference.com/london-2017/). The conference included 90 delegates and was a great day of reflection on the past decade of behaviour change in the UK. It was also a great reminder of all of the great work going on in the UK at present and brought together public, private, academic and practice professionals which created great dialogue for groups who don’t always overlap very often.

Professor Jeff French notes the main insights from the keynote speakers of the conference:

  • The need for a coordinated intervention mix informed and powered by citizen insight.
  • The need to be reflective practitioners constantly questioning and improving what we do.
  • At a time of mistrust the need to develop proactive respectful ongoing dialog with people so that the co-creation of solutions can flourish.
  • The need for citizen / family focus programmes rather than topic based programmes.
  • The potential of social enterprise to make a contribution and the need to build stakeholder coalitions to solve problems.

All of these can benefit from the application of marketing concepts and techniques.

The conference organisers are grateful for SBM’s and the Marketing Interactions and Consumer Behaviour Research Group’s support.
