The Centre for Management and Organisational History (CMOH)
The Centre for Management and Organisational History (CMOH) is the newest centre in the School of Business and Management History, being established in 2010. Academics at Queen Mary who are involved with the Centre are Paul Duguid, Sonja Gallhofer, Roger Johnston, Giuliano Maielli, Sean McCartney, Nicholas O'Shaughnessy and Michael Rowlinson (School of Business and Management) and Alastair Owen (School of Geography).
Our work is widely published in leading journals, as well as in books and other media. Michael Rowlinson is founder-editor of a leading journal in our field (Management & Organizational History).
Our research is diverse: we employ a variety of perspectives and methodologies and range chronologically from the eighteenth century (McCartney on the financial reporting and profitability of early companies) to the post-War period (Maielli on technological change and the introduction of robots at Fiat in the 1970s/1980s), and also goes beyond the parameters of what has traditionally been thought of as ‘Business History’. For example Gallhofer is currently researching accounting, governance and social responsibility in Quaker organisations, Rowlinson has studied the (mis)use by corporations of their own history as part of their public relations whilst O'Shaughnessy will shortly be publishing a book (Selling Hitler) which analyses the political marketing methods of the Nazis.
Our website aims to provide a brief introduction to CMOH scholars and their contact details, and information on events and publications, as well as links to our Working Paper Series.
