WELCOME TO THE CENTRE FOR GLOBALISATION RESEARCH

The Centre for Globalisation Research (CGR) was inaugurated in 2005. CGR is a dedicated research effort, the unifying theme of which is the study of the sources and consequences of globalisation, here understood in its broad sense of interconnectedness. Current projects are concerned with the structure and dynamics of linkages between individuals, social groups and firms, the conditions that promote or hinder information diffusion and the spread of innovation, and the mechanisms that underpin the flow of labour, technology and capital between and within countries. The group consists of researchers whose interests range from the study of behaviour at the local level to the investigation of emergent phenomena at the global level. Examples of topics at the local level include: knowledge creation, imitation, spillover and transfer; property rights; and innovation. Examples of topics at the global level comprise: the development of economic systems; the evolution of global business; the multinational enterprise, and foreign direct investment

CGR is a multidisciplinary project. It is distinguished by its commitment to bringing together researchers from around the world with diverse disciplinary backgrounds. Researchers in the centre draw on a variety of methodologies. However, special emphasis is placed on the application of the cutting edge of mathematical, statistical, econometric and computational techniques to problems relevant to globalisation. Several of its members also draw on historical data and information in their research. The centre consists of a group of members from Queen Mary, University of London, and a network of visiting fellows from a number of universities from the United Kingdom, Continental Europe and North America.

The Centre hosts a Globalization Seminar Series in which leading experts from different fields in social sciences talk about globalization and major conferences and workshops. The CGR is part of international networks such as the Globalization Network, the Evian Group, Project Syndicate and the Researchers Alliance for Development (RAD). The aim with these networks is to discuss and disseminate ideas, while developing new ground in interdisciplinary research.

Workshop - "Empirical Analysis of Firm Heterogeneity in International Trade"

Venue: Centre for Globalisation Research, School of Business and Management Queen Mary, University of London

11 November 2009, 1-6pm
New firm or transaction level data sets have prompted great interest in the mechanics of international trade, leading to novel stylised facts and new theories explaining the causes and consequences of trade between nations.

This workshop will be an informal forum of discussion of the latest empirical evidence obtained from these new data sets. Our goal is to select a small number of papers in order to allow for feedback and debate from participants. Of particular interest are papers that consider the link between international trade and labour markets.

Dr Richard Kneller (University of Nottingham) has kindly agreed to deliver a keynote lecture.

There is a limited budget for reimbursement of travel expenses: please indicate in your submission if you wish to apply for partial travel costs support. There is no conference fee.

Please send your submissions (full papers or extended abstracts) to the organiser, Pedro Martins, at p.martins@qmul.ac.uk by October 9th. The list of accepted papers and the programme will be released by October 16th.
